| Set in 1919, this book tells the story of Nellie Lee Love, a young African-American girl who lives with her family in Bradford Corners, Tennessee. Life in Bradford Corners is quiet--or so it seems. The only communication that Nellie's family has with the larger black communities elsewhere is when Nellie's dad receives the NAACP magazine every month. But word gets out that a lot of blacks are receiving the magazine, and the sheriff doesn't like it one bit--he tells the community that if anyone is caught reading the magazine, the Ku Klux Klan will have the last word with them.
